What is Sled Hockey?
(video)
Sled hockey is the fast, exciting, rough n' tumble version of ice hockey
that allows people with mobility disabilities to compete alongside their
non-disabled friends. . The game is
essentially the same as any “stand-up” ice hockey game with the major
difference being that all of the players sit in a sled which is attached
to two hockey skate blades under the seat. In the most competitive
games, hard checking, raised puck shooting, and penalty killing are as
much a part of sled hockey as they are in “stand-up” hockey.
The Maine Sled Hockey
Program provides opportunities for people with disabilities to
participate in sled hockey and promotes the development of excellence in
sled hockey in Maine. The Maine Sled Hockey Program is open
to players aged 15 and above with lower leg mobility-related
disabilities or injuries and their non-disabled family members and
friends. The
Maine Sled Hockey Pirates are a distinct
competitive team
within the Maine Sled Hockey Program comprised of players age 18
and older with and without disabilities. The Team coordinates several
outreach clinics each season and plays in the
Prudential Northeast Sled Hockey League.
