Maine Black Bears Sled Hockey Program

December 17, 2006 - Danbury, CT: After a scoreless first period where neither team was able to get any consistent offensive penetration, Pirate Kip St. Germaine drew the first blood early in he second and netted another soon thereafter to open the flood gates for an eventual 6-0 flogging of the New Hampshire Wildcats. The Pirates had not had a complete team practice since they were last together at the Prudential United Spinal Tournament in Hackensack, NJ in late November and it took a while for the Pirates to trim their rigging. Once they got underway, the Maine skaters assaulted their good friend Aguinaldo "Peter the Hammer" Luis, the Wildcats veteran goalie, with 3 shots in the first, 8 tough shots in the second and 7 more in the third for a total of 18. Buccaneer tender Jeff Labbe turned aside 10 NH shots in the skirmish.

Taylor Chace had moved back to a defensive position in the absence of Wildcat long-timer Khrista Matthews and he and teammate Crystal Chalich did a great job parrying one Maine tack after another. Chace was also able to generate offensive pressure on the Pirates on his own floating past the Pirate's defensemen and firing his deadly cannon only to have it redirected by Labbe like grape-shot off Old Ironsides. Moving much faster than usual in a new sled, Happy Treantafel made his presence felt with his trademark bone jarring checks and chuckles.

Maine Captain Peter Grosso played an excellent two-way game and in addition to making several key defensive plays, ripped 2 goals for the Pirates in the third to end up with 2 goals and 2 assists. St. Germaine added another goal and an assist that resulted in a beautiful redirected goal by Brett Goodnow to his earlier 2 goals to tally 4 points too. Pirate workhorse Dan Sousa also had 4 points and led in the assist column setting up 4 goals. Craig Gray and Andy Moore each chipped in with an assist. Pirates newcomer Billy "TinkerBill" Smith made his first appearance in a Pirates uniform and played an excellent game. Garret "Stringer" Stephens and Angelo Castigliola, both employees of Pirate's lead sponsor UnumProvident, played strong games working well in Maine's transitional game.

Maine and New Hampshire will clash again on February 11, 2007 when they take the ice at the Danbury Ice Arena in Prudential Northeast Sled Hockey League play.

Final Score: Pirates 6, Wildcats 0.
